Worlds collided when rock legend John Oates met auto design legend Chip Foose during Oates’ recent West Coast tour. A former semi-pro race driver himself, Oates was thrilled to meet the host of the Velocity TV series Overhaulin’.
Oates received a personal tour of the Chip Foose Design headquarters, including a sneak peek of the cars Foose is currently working and his original designs. Oates then returned the favor by having Foose as his personal guest at his show that evening at the Mozambique in Laguna Beach, CA.
Oates told the Huntington Beach Independent, “When Chip does his drawings, it’s kind of like the writing of the song. And then when he creates the car, that’s kind of like cutting the record. We both go through a lot of processes before we get into the final version.”

In 1998, Foose and his wife Lynne started their Huntington Beach, CA- based company Foose Design. Foose is the youngest member ever inducted into the Hot Rod Hall of Fame and has been involved with seven winners of the prestigious AMBR (America’s Most Beautiful Roadster) Award. Foose was personally selected by Pixar’s John Lasseter to contribute paint schemes and graphic treatments to the hit movie Cars and consult on the sequel, Cars 2. Encouraged by the continued popularity of “Overhaulin’,” Discovery Communication’s Velocity TVk relaunched the show with all new episodes in 2012.
